Quest Journal

Privacy Policy

Last updated:

Quest Journal is an iPhone app made by Andy Nicolaides. In this policy, “I” and “me” refer to Andy as Quest Journal’s developer. This page explains where your journal is kept, and which services Quest Journal connects to when you use features that need them.

In short

  • Your journal is stored on your iPhone and, when iCloud is available, in your own private iCloud database.
  • Quest Journal has no accounts of its own, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking.
  • Nothing you write is sent to me.
  • SteamGridDB is optional. Without your own SteamGridDB API key, Quest Journal makes no requests to it.

Your journal

Your entries, photos and game icons are stored on your iPhone. When iCloud is available for Quest Journal, your journal is also stored in your own private iCloud database, so it can appear on your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account.

Quest Journal has no accounts of its own, analytics, advertising or tracking, and nothing you write is sent to me. I don’t operate any server for Quest Journal.

If you email me for support, I’ll receive your message, your email address and anything you choose to include, as with any email.

iCloud

iCloud is provided by Apple and covered by Apple’s privacy policy. Quest Journal only asks iOS whether iCloud can be used; it doesn’t see your Apple Account details.

Changes can take a while to reach your other devices. If iCloud isn’t available — you’re signed out, or iCloud is turned off for Quest Journal — iOS may remove your journal from this iPhone until iCloud is available again. What is stored in iCloud stays there.

You can delete Quest Journal’s data from iCloud in your iPhone’s iCloud storage settings.

Photos and camera

Images you add from your photo library, Files or the camera are copied into your journal, and stored with it in iCloud when iCloud is available. Quest Journal can only see the images you pick, and uses the camera only when you take a picture for an entry.

SteamGridDB (optional)

If you add your own SteamGridDB API key in Settings, the names of games you search for or write about are sent to SteamGridDB, with your key, to suggest games and find their icons. Icons are then downloaded from SteamGridDB and kept with your journal, including in your private iCloud database when iCloud is available. SteamGridDB’s own privacy policy covers those requests.

Without a key, Quest Journal makes no requests to SteamGridDB.

Your key

Your API key is stored in your iPhone’s Keychain and is only sent to SteamGridDB. It isn’t part of your journal, so Quest Journal doesn’t sync it to your other devices. You can remove it at any time in Settings.

Backups

Like other app data, the journal on your iPhone is included in your iPhone’s own backups, such as iCloud Backup, if you use them.

Deleting your data

Deleting an entry removes it and its photos from your journal, including from iCloud and your other devices. Deleting Quest Journal removes your journal from this iPhone; a copy stored in iCloud stays there until you delete it from your iCloud storage settings.

Third-party services

Apple, for iCloud, and SteamGridDB, if you add a key, each have their own privacy practices and policies. Apart from these, Quest Journal doesn’t connect to any other service. I don’t operate either service and can’t speak for how they handle information, so please review their policies if you have questions about them.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, I’ll update it here and in the app, along with the date at the top.
