This page covers Quest Journal 1.0, which requires iOS 17 or later.
Getting started
Tap the + button to start a new entry. Choose the game it’s about, then write as much or as little as you like. Each entry can also have a title, the character you were playing, a location, tags of your own and images with captions.
Your entries come together in three places:
- Timeline: every entry, newest first, with search.
- Calendar: your entries by month and day.
- Library: a journal for each game, gathering all of its entries in one place.
Does Quest Journal track game completion?
No. Quest Journal is a journal, not a backlog tracker. There’s no completion status, percentage or list of finished games, just the story of what happened while you played.
iCloud sync
Where is my journal stored?
On your iPhone. When iCloud is available for Quest Journal, your journal is also stored in your own private iCloud database, so it can appear on your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Nothing you write is sent to the developer. There’s more detail in the Privacy Policy.
Does Quest Journal require iCloud?
No. You don’t need iCloud to write, and there’s no Quest Journal account to create. With iCloud, your journal is kept in your private iCloud database and can appear on your other devices.
What happens if iCloud is unavailable?
If you’re signed out of iCloud, or iCloud is turned off for Quest Journal, iOS may remove your journal from this iPhone until iCloud is available again. What is stored in iCloud stays there, and your entries return once iCloud is available. You can check the current status in Quest Journal’s Settings, under iCloud.
Why hasn’t an entry appeared on my other device yet?
Changes can take a while to reach your other devices. Check that both are signed in to the same Apple Account, with iCloud turned on for Quest Journal, and that they’re connected to the internet. Opening Quest Journal on each device can help.
SteamGridDB
Quest Journal can use SteamGridDB, a community library of game artwork, to suggest game names as you type and to find an icon for each game you write about. Quest Journal isn’t affiliated with SteamGridDB.
How do I enable SteamGridDB artwork?
Get a free API key from your SteamGridDB account preferences, then open Quest Journal’s Settings, paste the key into the SteamGridDB section and tap Save. Quest Journal checks the key with SteamGridDB before saving it.
Why do I need my own SteamGridDB API key?
Quest Journal doesn’t have servers or accounts of its own, so requests go straight from your iPhone to SteamGridDB using your key. When you add a key, the names of games you search for or write about are sent to SteamGridDB to find them. Your key is stored in your iPhone’s Keychain, isn’t synced to your other devices, and can be removed at any time in Settings.
Can I use Quest Journal without SteamGridDB?
Yes. It’s entirely optional. Without a key you can type any game name, and use your own image as a game’s icon. Quest Journal makes no requests to SteamGridDB unless you’ve added a key.
Images and journal entries
How do I add images to an entry?
While writing an entry, add images from your photo library, Files or the camera, and give each one a caption if you like. Images are copied into your journal, and stored with it in iCloud when iCloud is available. Quest Journal can only see the images you choose.
How do I remove journal data?
To delete an entry, swipe left on it in the Timeline or Calendar and tap Delete. This removes the entry and its photos from your journal, including from iCloud and your other devices.
Deleting the Quest Journal app removes your journal from that iPhone. A copy stored in iCloud stays there until you delete Quest Journal’s data from your iPhone’s iCloud storage settings.
Troubleshooting
My journal is empty after signing out of iCloud
When iCloud isn’t available, iOS may remove your journal from this iPhone. Sign back in to iCloud, and check that iCloud is turned on for Quest Journal. Your entries will return from iCloud, though it can take a little while.
Quest Journal couldn’t verify my SteamGridDB key
Check that you’ve copied the whole key, with no extra characters, and that your iPhone is connected to the internet. If it still won’t verify, try generating a new key in your SteamGridDB account preferences.
A game doesn’t have an icon
Icons from SteamGridDB need a saved key, and not every game has one there. You can always choose your own image as the game’s icon instead.
